1Stewards, Not Owners+

We are Stewards, not Owners of what God has given us.

The master in the parable doesn't surrender his property - he entrusts it. Every talent in our care still belongs to Him. Our job is not to possess, but to manage well on His behalf.

Matthew 25:14-15

14"For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away."

Definition

Stewardship is using God-given resources for God-given goals.

Paul described his own life as a "stewardship from God" (Colossians 1:25) - not money, but a message. We carry that same treasure. Stewardship of money matters, but it must be connected to the deeper stewardship of God's mission and ministry.

Usually when people think about stewardship, they think about money. That's true - but we can manage money well and still have nothing to do with God. Real stewardship is broader: it touches every resource He has placed in our hands.

2Multiplication, Not Maintenance+

God expects Multiplication, not Maintenance.

The first two servants doubled what they were given. The master's response to both was identical - not because their totals matched, but because their multiplication did. Holding steady was never the assignment.

Matthew 25:20-23 · Selected

20"And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more… 21His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.' 22And he also who had the two talents came forward… 23His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant…'"

It's easy to keep things simple - to protect what we have rather than risk it. But God didn't give us talents to hold onto. He gave them so He could work through us. He has placed His Spirit in you to make His name known.

Tim Dearborn

It is not the church of God that has a mission in the world, but the God of mission who has a church in the world.

We don't have a mission - we are the vehicle for the mission. The seven acres, the resources, the relationships, the years - they were all given to be invested for His glory.

3Reward Based on Faithfulness+

God will reward you based on your Faithfulness.

Both faithful servants heard the same words: "Well done, good and faithful servant." God's reward isn't tied to the size of your talent - it's tied to the faithfulness of your stewardship.

Matthew 25:21

21"His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.'"

You don't need to compare your talents to anyone else's. The five-talent and two-talent servants received the exact same commendation. What the master measured was not output, but obedience.

A True Story

Some years ago a woman in Africa became a Christian. Filled with gratitude, she decided to do something for Christ.

She was blind, uneducated, and seventy years old.

She brought her French Bible to a missionary and asked her to underline John 3:16 in red ink. Then she sat in front of a boys' school each afternoon. When school dismissed, she'd ask passing boys if they read French. When they proudly said yes, she asked them to read the passage in red - and told them about Christ.

Over the years, twenty-four young men became pastors because of her work.

One verse. One faithful woman. Twenty-four pastors. Faithfulness multiplies in ways we cannot calculate.

4Six Talents to Inventory+

Six Talents to Inventory.

God has given each of us a unique mix of resources to invest for His Kingdom. Before you can invest your talents, you have to name them. Walk slowly through these six categories.

1
Abilities

Your natural or developed skills - communication, organization, creativity, problem-solving.

What comes naturally to me that others find difficult?
2
Position

Your roles, relationships, and spheres of influence - professional, relational, community-based.

Where do I have unique influence?
3
Gifts

Special abilities given by the Holy Spirit for building up the church - teaching, mercy, encouragement.

How has God uniquely equipped me to serve the body?
4
Possessions

Physical resources - home, vehicle, tools, belongings - that could be used to bless others.

What do I own that could be shared for ministry?
5
Finances

Financial resources and how you allocate them. Stewardship goes beyond tithing to every dollar's Kingdom impact.

Am I generous in ways that make eternal differences?
6
Opportunities

Doors God opens - chance encounters, invitations to serve, unique circumstances.

What needs am I uniquely positioned to meet?
The Heart of It
Stewardship is using God-given resources for God-given goals.
Two Steps to Invest
Action Steps
01

Take an inventory of your talents.

You can't invest what you haven't named. Walk through the six categories. Don't disqualify yourself before God does.

  • List three abilities others have affirmed in you.
  • Name positions and relationships where you have influence.
  • Identify spiritual gifts confirmed by your church community.
  • Inventory possessions that could be shared for ministry.
  • Review one month of finances - where is Kingdom investment visible?
  • Note the open doors currently in front of you.
02

See where God is at work - and join Him.

Stewardship isn't manufactured; it's responsive. Look for movement already underway and step into it with what's in your hand.

  • Identify one place to volunteer or serve in your church this month.
  • Name one neighbor, coworker, or friend to invest in relationally.
  • Pick one financial gift beyond your normal giving for Kingdom work.
  • Choose one opportunity you've been delaying out of fear, and take the next step.
  • Pray daily: "Lord, show me where you're at work and how to join you."
